Garden Aggregate FAQ's

We know our garden stones and all the gravel, slate and stones in our collections are fantastic choices for your next garden project. However, as with all design, we certainly see trends. Each year there will be a clear favourite, but there are also the best go-to aggregates we see customers use year in year out, without doubt customer favourites. Our most popular garden aggregates include:

Decorative Chippings: Ideal for pathways and borders, available in a range of colours and textures. Ever popular choices include the light cream Cotswold Chippings and the striking marble Flamingo Chippings.

Slate: Perfect for modern, sleek garden designs. Plum Slate is a richly coloured decorative slate with a blend of purple/plum tones with the occasional streak of green and a choice we see regularly made by our customers.

Gravel: Great for driveways and large areas, offering durability and style. Golden Flint is a rich buff-coloured, angular chipping that darkens when wet, adding depth and character to pathways, driveways, rockeries and borders.

Pebbles: Adding a natural, rounded look to any garden space. Despite a fantasticly wide range, our number one choice by customers in confidently Scottish Pebbles, naturally rounded glacial stones with a unique mix of brown, grey and pink tones.

Some decorative aggregates are ideal for driveways, whereas others not so much. Suitability depends on a variety of factors including stone size, weight grade and your ground conditions. It also depends on volume of vehicle traffic.

We advise getting in touch with our specialist landscaping teams at your local branch if you are unsure, we will always offer impartial advice on suitability.

Smaller, angular stones and gravel are the best for footpaths because they lock together to create a stable surface that is comfortable to walk on, while larger or rounded stones can move underfoot and become difficult to walk on.

For plant beds, almost all of our decorative chippings, slate or pebbles are ideal. They retain moisture, suppress weeds, and add a polished look. Here it is mostly about your own taste, you can of course book a consultation with our garden design team or message us just for some friendly advice.

Fernco Strengthens Support for Property Flood Resilience

With climate change driving increasingly severe and unpredictable weather patterns, Fernco is reaffirming its commitment to protecting UK homes and businesses from rising flood risk. By supporting the Government’s Be Flood Ready initiative, Fernco is leading the charge in property flood resilience (PFR)—offering practical, cost-effective solutions that can be sourced directly from trusted builders’ merchants across the UK.

Forecasts indicate that one in four UK properties could face flood risk by 2050, with the Environment Agency already issuing flood alerts nationwide this autumn. As the country prepares for a wetter, windier season, the need for reliable flood protection solutions is more urgent than ever.

“Flooding is becoming more frequent and more severe across the UK,” says Ryan Lockwood, National Sales and Marketing Manager at Fernco. “While the UK Government has pledged £2.65 billion for flood defence, less than £100,000 is specifically allocated to property-level flood protection.
